FlowDrya wood chip dryers are manufactured by STRONGA LTD, built to order in the UK as part of the FlowDrya continuous flow drying range, in production since 2012.
FlowDrya reduces freshly harvested wood chip from up to 65% moisture down to the target output required by the market – from 8–10% for wood pellets to 15% for biochar feedstock and 15–20% for premium biomass boiler fuel.
Why Wood Chip Needs Drying
Freshly chipped green wood can contain up to 65% moisture, depending on climate, season and species. High moisture content in wood chip reduces boiler and biochar reactor feeding reliability and significantly lowers energy efficiency. Reducing wood chip moisture from 60% to 20% more than doubles net calorific value (kJ per m³), while drying to below 20% enables clean combustion with lower VOCs and particulate emissions, and extends storage life by preventing mould and bacterial degradation.
How a FlowDrya Wood Chip Plant Works
FlowDrya dries wood chip using low-temperature drying air (70–90°C), which is more energy efficient than high-temperature rotary drum drying and significantly reduces fire risk. PulseWave™ agitation ensures consistent moisture reduction across the whole load, and drying targets are adjusted via the DryStation™ HMI strokes-per-hour control – FlowDrya can reduce fresh green wood chip moisture from 65% down to 30%, 20% or 8%, depending on the application. Drying air can be supplied from CHP residual heat, biomass boilers, steam, hot water, flue gas, electric heating or biogas.
Wood Chip Moisture Targets by Application
Target moisture depends on end use: premium biomass fuel (M20) at 15–20% for maximum value and market access; standard biomass fuel (M30) at 25–30% for many industrial boilers; wood pellet production at 8–10%; and biochar feedstock at around 15%, where drying increases biochar yield by more than 30% compared with wetter feedstock. Wood chip is commonly graded to ÖNORM G20–G200/W20–W50 or ISO 17225-4 P16–P100/M10–M50 standards, and FlowDrya can be configured to dry chip to any of these moisture classes.
Wood Chip Moisture Content & Biochar Yield
| Wood Chip Moisture Content | Biochar Yield (t/t feedstock) | Carbon Content |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | 0.30 t/t | 78% |
| 20% | 0.28 t/t | 75% |
| 30% | 0.25 t/t | 70% |
| 40% | 0.21 t/t | 65% |
Wood Chip Dryer Manufacturer FAQs
Who manufactures wood chip dryers?
FlowDrya wood chip dryers are manufactured by STRONGA LTD (Companies House 03974884), engineered to order in the UK. The FlowDrya product line has been in production since 2012.
How does a FlowDrya wood chip drying plant work?
FlowDrya dries wood chip with low-temperature drying air (70–90°C), with PulseWave™ agitation ensuring even moisture reduction across the load. Target moisture is set on the DryStation™ HMI via adjustable strokes per hour, and the dryer can integrate with CHP, biomass boiler, steam, hot water, flue gas, electric or biogas heat sources.
What moisture content can FlowDrya reach for wood chip?
FlowDrya is capable of reducing fresh green wood chip moisture content from around 65% down to 30%, 20% or 8%, depending on what is optimal for the customer's process.
What heat sources can be used for drying wood chip?
FlowDrya integrates with CHP residual heat, biomass boilers, steam, hot water, flue gas, electric heating and biogas. The Heatex air handling system is configured to optimise the specific heat source available on site.
Does wood chip drying have a high fire risk?
FlowDrya's low-temperature flow drying significantly reduces fire risk compared to high-temperature rotary drum dryers. Unlike rotary drum dryers with direct-fired systems and high dust accumulation, FlowDrya's fines sub-plenum allows for fines separation and integrated screening, making it one of the safest wood chip dryers on the market.
What wood chip standards does FlowDrya work to?
Wood chip is commonly graded to ÖNORM G20/G30 or ISO 17225-4 P16s/P31s standards, covering particle size, consistency and moisture content. FlowDrya is configured to dry a wide range of wood chip fractions to these local standards.
Do you install and commission wood chip drying plants?
Yes. Every FlowDrya is fully assembled and factory-tested at Stronga's works before being disassembled for shipping. On-site installation is typically completed within days, followed by commissioning, operator training and a full 'hot test' before handover.
