FlowDrya wood-chip dryers are built to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire works and shipped to New Zealand sawmills, forestry operations and heat-plant developers, though we hold no commissioned woodchip line in the country yet. Drying is central here because green chip and forest residue leave the forest or mill at high moisture, which slashes calorific value and risks storage heating. Bringing chip down to a low, stable moisture turns a bulky by-product into a graded biomass fuel or a clean furnish for pellets and panels. With so much of every harvested tree available as residue, a dryer is what converts that fibre into a fuel a boiler can burn efficiently.

Regulatory context

Disposal is priced through the waste disposal levy set under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 and administered by the Ministry for the Environment; the levy on municipal (class 1) landfill is NZD 65 per tonne from 1 July 2025, rising to NZD 70 per tonne on 1 July 2026 and NZD 75 per tonne on 1 July 2027, and has been expanded across more landfill classes — the principal lever pushing wet residues toward recovery, drying and reuse rather than burial.

Carbon is priced through the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS), the country's main tool for cutting emissions; a plant that burns coal or natural gas must surrender New Zealand Units for its combustion emissions, so displacing that fossil fuel with a dried, waste-derived or biomass fuel directly reduces the unit liability. Biosolids applied to land are governed by the beneficial reuse of biosolids standard administered by the Water Services Authority (Taumata Arowai) under the Water Services (Wastewater Environmental Performance Standards) Regulations 2025; a product is graded by stabilisation (Grade A or B, on pathogen reduction) and by contaminant concentration, with only the top stabilisation-and-contaminant grade allowed as a permitted activity without a resource consent — and thermal treatment and drying support that higher stabilisation grade.

The rising waste disposal levy makes burial expensive: at NZD 65 per tonne for class 1 landfill in 2025 and scheduled to reach NZD 70 per tonne in 2026 and NZD 75 per tonne in 2027 (before gate and transport charges), every tonne of water or inert residue kept out of landfill by drying is a direct and growing saving.

Why dry wood chip at all?
