Each FlowDrya digestate plant reduces wet separated digestate fibre from over 60% moisture down to below 20% for storage and land application, or lower for bedding and pelleting, using PulseWave™ agitation and a stainless-steel drying floor to handle corrosive AD by-products.

Why Digestate Fibre Needs Drying

Separated digestate fibre from anaerobic digestion (AD) plants typically leaves the separator at 60% moisture or more. Left wet, it degrades quickly through microbial activity and ammonia loss, is difficult to store, and can leach nitrogen and phosphorus into water courses. Drying digestate fibre down to below 20% moisture stabilises the fibre, improves friability and removes the leaching risk, turning a liability into a marketable bio-fertiliser, animal bedding or bio-fuel feedstock.

How a FlowDrya Digestate Fibre Plant Works

Wet digestate fibre is fed into the FlowDrya's high-capacity in-feed hopper and passed onto the hydraulic PulseWave™ drying bed, which tumbles and mixes the fibre as it moves along the drying deck so clumpy material dries evenly. Because AD digestate can be corrosive, FlowDrya digestate dryers are supplied with a stainless-steel package for long-term corrosion resistance. The dryer runs a 'stop-start' cycle – capable of up to 8,000 hours/year duty cycle, but typically 'live' for only around 2,000 hours/year – reducing wear, while the integrated DryStation™ HMI touchscreen gives the operator control over the drying process and consistent output moisture.

Target Moisture Content by Application

FlowDrya digestate fibre plants are configured to the target moisture content required by the end market: circa 18% moisture content for animal bedding, below 20% for loose bulk fertiliser, and 8–10% for bio-fuel and fertiliser pellets (up to 15% for briquettes). Drying from 60% to below 20% also upgrades the calorific value of digestate fibre from around 3 MJ/kg to around 15 MJ/kg, making it viable as a solid biofuel as well as a fertiliser replacement.
