FlowDrya digestate dryers are engineered to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire works and supplied to biogas operators here, though we hold no commissioned digestate line on home soil yet and will not imply one. Drying matters to a domestic anaerobic-digestion plant because the Kompostverordnung lets a stabilised digestion product shed its waste status and sell as a quality compost only when it meets the ordinance's quality classes – and a wet, actively degrading Gärrückstand rarely holds those bands. Conditioning the pressed fibre to a low, even moisture concentrates and fixes the nitrogen, phosphate and potash, so the material stores through the closed application season and travels as a documented soil product rather than an over-applied slurry.

Regulatory context
The Abfallwirtschaftsgesetz 2002 (AWG 2002) is Austria's framework waste statute and transposes the EU Waste Framework Directive into national law. It fixes a five-step waste hierarchy — prevention, preparation for re-use, recycling, other recovery including energy recovery, and disposal only as a last resort — so an operation that dries a wet residue into a fuel or a soil product counts as recovery and ranks above burial in the legal order.

Austria was an early mover against landfill. Under the Deponieverordnung, waste exceeding a strict five per cent total-organic-carbon limit — untreated municipal waste and the combustible residual fraction within it — may not be landfilled; the ban was phased in from 2004 and consolidated in the Deponieverordnung 2008. Cheap burial of wet, biodegradable residue is therefore closed off, which pushes such material toward pre-treatment, drying and recovery rather than a hole in the ground.

Compost and solid digestion products made from waste can shed their waste status and be marketed as quality compost once they satisfy the Kompostverordnung (BGBl. II No. 292/2001), which fixes the permitted raw materials, quality classes, labelling and contaminant limits a product must hold. A dried, stabilised feedstock holds those quality bands far more easily than a wet, actively degrading one, and is far cheaper to store and transport.

Economic context
Austria prices carbon on heating, transport and small-industry fuels through its national emissions trading scheme (Nationaler Emissionszertifikatehandel, NEHG), introduced in 2022. The fixed price reached 55 euros per tonne of CO2 in 2025 and remains at 55 euros in 2026, holding until the EU ETS 2 for buildings and road transport starts in January 2028; heavy industry sits under the EU Emissions Trading System. Displacing coal or petcoke with a dried waste- or biomass-derived fuel avoids a real per-tonne charge.

Bought-in energy is a real cost. Statistics Austria reports a gross electricity price of 0.293 euros per kWh and a gross natural gas price of 0.126 euros per kWh. Electricity from solid biomass and biogas is supported under the Erneuerbaren-Ausbau-Gesetz (EAG, Renewable Energy Expansion Act) of 2021 through market premiums and technology tenders, part of Austria's statutory targets of 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2040. The domestic case turns on nutrient logistics and cheap heat. A biogas site already generates surplus process heat, and firing the dryer on that recovered heat rather than bought-in energy is decisive where the gross electricity price runs at 0.293 euros per kWh and gas at 0.126 euros per kWh. Drying shrinks water weight, so each load carries more plant-available nutrient and fewer tankers cross the countryside. Because biomass and biogas generation is supported under the EAG toward the 100 per cent renewable-electricity target for 2030, a digester that also markets a dried, quality-assured product improves its whole-site economics. Assumptions: heat source, haulage distance and offtake price are site-specific.

A wet fibre is heavy, hard to store through prohibited application periods and struggles to meet compost quality classes. Drying concentrates the nutrients, stabilises the material and turns it into a documented product that can be stored, transported and sold.
How does the Kompostverordnung affect a dried product?
The ordinance sets the quality classes, permitted inputs and contaminant limits a compost must meet to leave waste status. A dried, stabilised feedstock holds those bands more reliably than a raw, degrading one, easing the route to an end-of-waste, saleable product.
