We build FlowDrya digestate fibre dryers to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire works and ship them to German anaerobic-digestion operators, though no FlowDrya digestate line has been commissioned in the country yet. Drying matters here because separated digestate is a nitrogen-rich organic fertiliser, and under the Düngeverordnung a farm may apply no more than 170 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare a year, with a closed application period through autumn and winter. Reducing wet fibre from over 60% moisture to below 20% concentrates and stabilises its nitrogen and phosphate, letting an operator store the material through the closed period and place it as a documented product rather than over-spreading nearby. Because separated fibre runs acidic and ammonia-laden, every machine carries a stainless-steel package.

Regulatory context
The Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz (KrWG, Circular Economy Act) is Germany's framework waste statute and transposes the EU Waste Framework Directive into national law. Its section 6 fixes a five-step waste hierarchy — prevention, preparation for re-use, recycling, other recovery including energy recovery, and only then disposal — so an operation that dries wet residue into a fuel or a soil product counts as recovery and ranks above burial in the legal order rather than heading for a landfill.

Since 2005 Germany has banned the landfilling of untreated municipal and high-organic-content waste. Under the Deponieverordnung (Landfill Ordinance) household-like waste must be pre-treated — by incineration or mechanical-biological treatment, and held below strict limits on organic-substance content — before any residual may be buried, which closes off cheap disposal and pushes wet, biodegradable residues toward drying and recovery.

Economic context
Germany prices carbon on heating and transport fuels through its national emissions trading scheme (nEHS) under the Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG): the fixed price rose from 25 euros per tonne of CO2 in 2021 to 55 euros in 2025, and from 2026 certificates are auctioned within a corridor of 55 to 65 euros, with coal covered since 2023 and waste fuels from 2024. This sits alongside the EU Emissions Trading System for heavy industry, so displacing coal or petcoke with a dried waste- or biomass-derived fuel avoids a real and rising per-tonne charge.

How does the Fertiliser Ordinance affect digestate here?

Can the dryer reach a fertiliser-pellet grade?
Yes. FlowDrya is configured to the target: below 20% for loose bulk fertiliser, around 18% for absorbent bedding, and 8–10% for a pellet or briquette feedstock. A lower, even moisture is what a pelletiser and a certified soil improver both need.
Does the stainless build suit corrosive digestate long term?
