We build FlowDrya bark dryers to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire works and ship them to Mexican sawmills and timber processors, though no FlowDrya bark line is commissioned for this material in the country yet. Fresh bark leaves the debarker at 65 per cent moisture or more, worth little as it stands; drying it to a low, even moisture turns a mill by-product into a graded biofuel for the mill's own boilers or for sale, or into a stable landscaping and mulch product. Using high-temperature air, FlowDrya can phytosanitise while it dries, meeting the 56°C for 30 minutes treatment used for cross-border movement – useful for a country that exports timber products. Recovering that residue as fuel or a soil product, rather than dumping it, is the direction the LGPGIR waste hierarchy sets.

Regulatory context

The General Law for the Prevention and Integral Management of Waste (Ley General para la Prevención y Gestión Integral de los Residuos, LGPGIR) is Mexico's framework federal statute for waste. It builds management on a priority order — prevention, reduction, reuse, recycling and valorización, which expressly covers both material and energy recovery, ahead of final disposal — so an operation that dries wet residue into a fuel or a soil product ranks above burial in the legal hierarchy rather than heading for a relleno sanitario or open tiradero.

A producer that sorts, treats or stores waste to make a refuse- or solid-recovered fuel is handling residuos de manejo especial. NOM-161-SEMARNAT-2011 sets the criteria that classify these special-management wastes and determine which are subject to a plan de manejo (management plan), and it binds large generators — those producing 10 tonnes a year or more — to operate under an approved plan.

Where the residue is composted or aerobically treated, the national standard NMX-AA-180-SCFI-2018 sets the methods and quality parameters for treating the organic fraction of urban and special-management solid waste and for the resulting compost, while Mexico City additionally applies NADF-020-AMBT-2011 to the quality of composta produced or distributed in the capital. A dried, stabilised feedstock is easier to hold within these quality bands.

Economic context

Mexico levies a federal carbon tax on fossil fuels under the IEPS (Impuesto Especial sobre Producción y Servicios), charged on their carbon content; its effective cost averages about 53 pesos per tonne of CO2 across fuels and it reaches coal, petroleum coke, fuel oil, diesel and gasoline while natural gas is exempt. Several states — among them Zacatecas, the State of Mexico, Querétaro and Durango — add their own state carbon taxes. Displacing coal or petroleum coke with a dried waste- or biomass-derived fuel therefore avoids a real per-tonne charge that natural-gas heat does not carry.

Burned in the mill's boiler it displaces coal, which carries a federal carbon tax averaging about 53 pesos per tonne of CO2 while natural gas is exempt – so the mill trims a growing liability while heating its kilns. Buying grid power instead is unattractive at roughly 4.088 pesos per kWh, so running the FlowDrya on the boiler's own recovered heat keeps drying almost free of bought-in energy. Surplus dried bark sells as fuel or, where it is graded as a composted mulch, is measured against NMX-AA-180-SCFI-2018; a dry, consistent product freights economically because the water weight is gone. Do you have a bark drying installation here?

Not for this material yet. We will not imply a reference we do not hold; our documented FlowDrya bark, woodchip and digestate lines run in Britain, and our delivered project in the country is the Enval plastic-packaging dryer near Mexico City.

Why dry bark at all?

Green bark is wet, bulky and rots, and burns badly. Drying raises its calorific value for a boiler, stabilises it for storage, and upgrades it into a saleable mulch or landscaping product rather than a disposal problem.

Can a sawmill run the dryer on its own heat?

Yes. The FlowDrya is designed to take recovered heat from the mill's existing biomass boiler or kiln exhaust, so bark is dried using energy the site already produces instead of costly grid power.

Can FlowDrya heat-treat bark for export?
