FlowDrya bark dryers are engineered to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire works and supplied to sawmills and wood processors here, though we hold no commissioned bark line on local soil; our nearest documented project in the country dries woodchips for biochar. Bark is the natural fuel of a forestry economy, and much of it is burned for process and district heat. Straight off the debarker it can hold around 65 per cent moisture, where it smoulders rather than burns and clogs a grate. Drying it toward 20 per cent turns a wet by-product into a dependable biofuel that fires a boiler cleanly, or into a graded landscaping and horticultural bark, without the water that makes raw bark heavy to move and slow to ignite. Spruce and pine bark, the dominant species in local sawmilling, are handled equally well, and sub-floor screening lifts soil and grit from the dried fraction during the pass.

Regulatory context
Swedish waste law rests on the Environmental Code (miljobalken) and the Waste Ordinance (avfallsforordning 2020:614) issued under it. Chapter 15 of the Code sets the waste hierarchy, giving reuse, recycling and other recovery priority over disposal, and the ordinance operationalises it: separately collected material intended for recovery may not simply be incinerated, and municipalities must reach material-recovery rates of 55 per cent by 2025, 60 per cent by 2030 and 65 per cent by 2035. Turning a wet residue into a fuel or a stabilised soil product is a recovery route the law ranks above burial.

Sweden bans the landfilling of waste that a dryer helps divert. Under the Ordinance on the Landfill of Waste (forordning 2001:512 om deponering av avfall), section 8 prohibits depositing sorted combustible waste, a ban in force since 2002, and organic waste, banned since 2005. Exemptions are narrow and granted case by case by the county board or the Environmental Protection Agency. Because burial is closed to these fractions, the residual and organic streams must instead be recovered as fuel or soil products, which is the single strongest legal driver for drying wet residues in this market.

The incineration and co-incineration of waste is governed by the Ordinance on the Incineration of Waste (forordning 2013:253 om forbranning av avfall), which implements the EU Industrial Emissions Directive. It covers dedicated energy-from-waste plants and co-incineration installations alike, and sections 67 to 70 set specific emission limits and permit conditions for cement kilns burning waste-derived fuel. A cement kiln or power plant firing refuse- or solid-recovered fuel operates under this ordinance, and a dried, consistent, low-moisture fuel is what keeps such a plant reliably inside those limits.

Digestate and compost sold as soil products are quality-assured through the voluntary SPCR 120 (biogodsel) and SPCR 152 (compost) certification schemes run by RISE, the Research Institutes of Sweden, as an independent certifier. The rules require that the product is made from clean, source-sorted, biologically degradable substrates from the food or feed chain, that it is hygienised, and that it meets limits on heavy-metal content and visible contaminants, verified through a qualification year and external audits. A dried, stabilised material holds those limits far more readily than a wet, actively degrading feedstock.

Economic context
Sweden runs one of the world's highest carbon prices. The carbon tax (koldioxidskatt) was introduced in 1991 at SEK 250 per tonne of carbon dioxide and had risen to SEK 1,200 per tonne by 2021, applied to fossil fuels used outside the EU Emissions Trading System; installations already covered by the EU ETS are exempt from the domestic tax to avoid double charging. Every tonne of fossil fuel a dried waste- or biomass-derived fuel displaces therefore avoids a real and steep carbon cost.

Sweden diverts almost all of its waste from landfill and recovers the energy through district heating. Less than 1 per cent of municipal waste is landfilled, and 34 waste-to-energy plants supply heat to about 1,445,000 households and electricity to about 780,000 households through the country's extensive district-heating networks. Because sorted combustible and organic wastes are barred from landfill and less than 1 per cent of the country's waste is buried, a wet residue has to find a home – and a sawmill that once had to shift it instead burns a dried bark in its own boiler, displacing bought-in fossil heat under a carbon tax that reached SEK 1,200 per tonne of CO2, among the highest in the world. What it does not burn can be sold as a horticultural product rather than tipped. Dried bark also stores without composting away its heating value, and a bagged horticultural grade ships to garden centres at a premium a wet residue could never fetch.
