Fresh bark comes off the log at around 65% moisture: wet, it rots in the pile, self-heats and is worth little, whether as a fuel or as a horticultural product. Dried to 20% or below, bark burns as a solid biofuel graded against the EN ISO 17225 series, or is sold clean as mulch and a growing-media component. The country's waste hierarchy under the Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz ranks this recovery above disposal. FlowDrya's moving floor dries stringy, uneven bark without shredding it into fines.

Regulatory context
The Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz (KrWG, Circular Economy Act) is Germany's framework waste statute and transposes the EU Waste Framework Directive into national law. Its section 6 fixes a five-step waste hierarchy — prevention, preparation for re-use, recycling, other recovery including energy recovery, and only then disposal — so an operation that dries wet residue into a fuel or a soil product counts as recovery and ranks above burial in the legal order rather than heading for a landfill.

Since 2005 Germany has banned the landfilling of untreated municipal and high-organic-content waste. Economic context
Germany prices carbon on heating and transport fuels through its national emissions trading scheme (nEHS) under the Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG): the fixed price rose from 25 euros per tonne of CO2 in 2021 to 55 euros in 2025, and from 2026 certificates are auctioned within a corridor of 55 to 65 euros, with coal covered since 2023 and waste fuels from 2024. Not yet. We will not imply a reference we do not hold; our documented FlowDrya bark, woodchip and digestate lines run in Britain on the identical platform a mill here would receive.
What moisture should bark reach?
For a solid biofuel or a clean horticultural product, bark is dried from around 65% down to 20% moisture or below. FlowDrya is set to the target the fuel or growing-media specification requires.
Why dry bark rather than sell it fresh?
Fresh bark rots, self-heats and is heavy with water that carries no energy. Drying stabilises it, concentrates the calorific value for fuel use, and produces a clean, consistent mulch or substrate a buyer will pay for.
Does the dryer cope with stringy, uneven bark?
Yes. The hydraulic moving floor conveys and tumbles fibrous, ragged bark across the deck for even drying, without hammering it into low-value dust.
Which standards apply to bark fuel here?
