FlowDrya bark dryers are built to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire works and supplied to sawmills and biomass operators here, and we state plainly that no bark line is yet commissioned on French soil. Bark is the wet, low-value co-product of a large sawmilling sector, and dry it becomes both a genuine fuel and a saleable horticultural product. Conditioning bark to a low, even moisture on the FlowDrya's deep, agitated bed lifts its calorific value for a biomass boiler, halts self-heating in the pile and opens a route into landscaping and growing-media markets, where a composted bark sold as an amendment answers to the NF U 44-051 standard. The moving floor tolerates the stringy, fibrous, grit-laden nature of raw bark that jams conventional dryers.

Regulatory context

Article L541-1 of the Code de l'environnement is the backbone of French waste law and transposes the EU Waste Framework Directive. It fixes a five-step hierarchy — prevention, preparation for re-use, recycling, other recovery including energy recovery, and disposal only as a last resort — and sets a statutory target to cut the tonnage of non-hazardous, non-inert waste sent to landfill by 50 per cent in 2025 against the 2010 level. Drying a wet residue into a fuel or a soil product is a recovery operation that ranks above burial in that legal order and helps a site meet the diversion goal.

The loi anti-gaspillage pour une économie circulaire (loi AGEC, law no. 2020-105 of 10 February 2020) reinforces that direction across the whole economy, expanding extended-producer-responsibility schemes and steering material away from disposal toward re-use and recovery. Compost and digestate sold as agricultural inputs in France must satisfy the mandatory standard NF U 44-051 on organic soil amendments, or be individually homologated, which fixes the permitted raw materials, maturity and contaminant limits a product must hold. A conforming material ceases to be a waste (sortie du statut de déchet) and can be traded like any other amendment; a dried, stabilised feedstock holds those quality limits far more easily than a wet, actively degrading one.

Economic context

France taxes landfill heavily through the déchets component of the taxe générale sur les activités polluantes (TGAP). From 1 January 2025 the standard TGAP rate for non-hazardous waste sent to a storage (landfill) facility is 65 euros per tonne, and the reduced rates that used to soften it have been withdrawn — a large, rising cost that pushes wet, divertible material toward drying and recovery rather than burial.

France also prices carbon on fossil fuels through the composante carbone built into the domestic energy tax (TICPE), valued at 44.60 euros per tonne of CO2 and frozen at that level since 2018 after the gilets jaunes protests halted its planned rise. Heavy industry sits additionally under the EU Emissions Trading System, so displacing coal or petroleum coke with a dried waste- or biomass-derived fuel avoids a real per-tonne carbon cost.

Bark economics turn on converting a disposal problem into a product. As a biomass fuel it feeds a market that ADEME's Fonds Chaleur backs directly, having put around 155 million euros into biomass boilers in 2025, and every point of moisture removed raises the energy delivered per tonne. A sawmill firing the dryer on recovered boiler or kiln heat converts cheaply, and displacing fossil fuel in a heat plant avoids the composante carbone of 44.60 euros per tonne of CO2. Bark that would otherwise be dumped also escapes the TGAP landfill tax of 65 euros per tonne. A wet, rotting bark is a cost; a dried, graded one earns revenue. Assumptions: heat source, species and end market govern the payback.

How is the drying powered?
