FlowDrya bark dryers are built to order at STRONGA's Hertfordshire factory and shipped to domestic sawmills and wood-processing sites; we hold no documented bark installation here yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Sawmills already fire biomass boilers to kiln their lumber, so the surplus heat that bark drying needs is usually on hand, and FlowDrya simply draws on it. A hard-to-store, low-grade residue that comes off the debarker wet – often near 65% moisture – is converted into clean, screened, uniform bark for the horticulture, mulch and landscaping trade, and the machine's sub-floor screening pulls soil and stones out during the drying pass so the finished product needs far less handling later.

Regulatory context

Waste management is largely a provincial responsibility, so a plant that stores, treats or dries a waste-derived material is authorised under provincial law — for example British Columbia's Environmental Management Act and its Organic Matter Recycling Regulation, or Ontario's Environmental Protection Act — and the exact permitting a drying or fuel-preparation site faces varies by province rather than being set by a single national rule.

The federal consumer fuel charge was set to zero on 1 April 2025, but federal industrial carbon pricing continues to apply to large emitters through the Output-Based Pricing System, so cement kilns, lime kilns and energy-from-waste plants still carry a price on their fossil-fuel combustion — an ongoing incentive to substitute conventional fuel with a dried, waste-derived alternative.

Bark drying is really a question of freight and grade. Damp bark is bulky, low in value and expensive to truck; once dried and screened it fetches premium horticultural and landscaping prices and packs far more saleable product into every load. The drying heat is usually free, because the sawmill's own biomass boiler – run to kiln its lumber – supplies it, so the marginal energy cost stays low even where industrial power is dear; in hydro-rich British Columbia, a major forestry province, the stop-start floor's small electrical draw barely registers. Bark that would otherwise be dumped also escapes disposal charges and the surcharges Metro Vancouver applies to banned wood loads, while gas near CAD 2.71 per gigajoule is the cheap fallback where no boiler exists. Assumptions: the strongest returns assume on-site waste heat and access to premium markets.

Do you have a bark drying installation here?

Not yet. We will not imply a bark reference we do not hold; our documented projects dry bark, digestate fibre and woodchips in Britain, on the same platform a domestic bark dryer would use.

Can a sawmill use its own heat to dry bark?

Almost always. Sawmills run biomass boilers for lumber kilning, and FlowDrya is designed to reuse that surplus thermal energy, so bark drying adds little to the site's fuel bill.

What are dried bark's markets domestically?

Screened dry bark sells into horticulture, decorative landscaping, playground surfacing and soil-conditioning blends, where clean, uniform, consistently dry fractions attract far higher prices than damp mill residue.

Does drying extend bark's shelf life?

Considerably. Wet bark self-heats, moulds and breaks down in the pile; dried bark stays stable, odour-free and saleable through the off-season, letting a mill hold inventory for peak landscaping demand.

Is bark drying viable without buying extra fuel?

Usually. The biomass boiler already installed for timber kilning supplies the heat, so the mill monetises a residue using thermal energy it is generating anyway.
