The extensive plantation forestry generates large volumes of wet bark, and left green it rots in the pile, burns poorly and is costly to move. Drying bark to a low, even moisture turns a mill by-product into a graded biofuel for the mill's own boilers or for sale, or into a stable landscaping and mulch product. Recovering that residue as fuel or a soil product, rather than dumping it, is the direction the national solid-waste law sets as open dumps close.

Regulatory context

The National Solid Waste Policy (Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos, Lei 12.305/2010) is the framework statute for waste in Brazil. It fixes a binding order of priority — non-generation, reduction, reuse, recycling, treatment and only then the environmentally adequate final disposal of the residual rejects — and expressly recognises energy recovery from waste, so a drying-and-recovery operation that turns wet residue into a fuel or a soil product sits high in that hierarchy rather than heading for burial.

The 2020 sanitation framework law (Lei 14.026/2020) amended the solid-waste policy to set firm, staggered deadlines for every municipality to close its open dumps (lixões) and adopt environmentally adequate final disposal, with the final tranche — the smallest municipalities, those under 50,000 inhabitants — due by August 2024. Burial of untreated waste is being closed off nationwide, so an operator that keeps generating wet residue needs a treatment and recovery route such as drying.

Why dry bark at all?
