Bark is the wet, low-value co-product of a sawmilling sector that ranks among Europe's largest, and dry it becomes a genuine fuel and a saleable horticultural product. Conditioning bark to a low, even moisture on the FlowDrya's deep, agitated bed lifts its calorific value for a biomass boiler, halts self-heating in the pile and opens a route into landscaping and growing-media markets. The moving floor tolerates the stringy, fibrous, grit-laden nature of raw bark that jams conventional dryers.

Regulatory context

The Abfallwirtschaftsgesetz 2002 (AWG 2002) is Austria's framework waste statute and transposes the EU Waste Framework Directive into national law. It fixes a five-step waste hierarchy — prevention, preparation for re-use, recycling, other recovery including energy recovery, and disposal only as a last resort — so an operation that dries a wet residue into a fuel or a soil product counts as recovery and ranks above burial in the legal order.

Austria was an early mover against landfill. Under the Deponieverordnung, waste exceeding a strict five per cent total-organic-carbon limit — untreated municipal waste and the combustible residual fraction within it — may not be landfilled; the ban was phased in from 2004 and consolidated in the Deponieverordnung 2008. Cheap burial of wet, biodegradable residue is therefore closed off, which pushes such material toward pre-treatment, drying and recovery rather than a hole in the ground.

Compost and solid digestion products made from waste can shed their waste status and be marketed as quality compost once they satisfy the Kompostverordnung (BGBl. II No. 292/2001), which fixes the permitted raw materials, quality classes, labelling and contaminant limits a product must hold. A dried, stabilised feedstock holds those quality bands far more easily than a wet, actively degrading one, and is far cheaper to store and transport.

Economic context

Austria prices carbon on heating, transport and small-industry fuels through its national emissions trading scheme (Nationaler Emissionszertifikatehandel, NEHG), introduced in 2022. The fixed price reached 55 euros per tonne of CO2 in 2025 and remains at 55 euros in 2026, holding until the EU ETS 2 for buildings and road transport starts in January 2028; heavy industry sits under the EU Emissions Trading System. Displacing coal or petcoke with a dried waste- or biomass-derived fuel avoids a real per-tonne charge.

Bought-in energy is a real cost. Statistics Austria reports a gross electricity price of 0.293 euros per kWh and a gross natural gas price of 0.126 euros per kWh. As a biomass fuel it feeds a market supported under the EAG, part of the drive to 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030, and every point of moisture removed raises the energy delivered per tonne. Because gross gas runs at 0.126 euros per kWh and electricity at 0.293 euros per kWh, a sawmill firing the dryer on recovered boiler or kiln heat converts cheaply. Displacing fossil fuel in a heat plant also avoids the 55-euro-per-tonne carbon charge where it applies. A wet, rotting bark is a cost; a dried, graded one earns revenue. Assumptions: heat source, species and end market govern the payback.

How is the drying powered?

Each dryer is fully assembled and factory-tested, then dismantled for freight and rebuilt on arrival, connected to the sawmill's heat supply and brought online through a structured start-up, shutdown and supervised trial before handover.
